The design process: Cube Necklaces

The design process: Cube Necklaces

I started to design the Cube necklaces last summer and step by step they formed into the shape they’re now. The shape origins from the graphic form of Nurmi logo. I wanted to keep the shape really simple, but still adding a little twist to it.

The production process started together with a carpenter Juuso Laurila from Retulansaaren Puusepät Oy. He lives and works in an island called Retulansaari which is located near Hämeenlinna, Finland.

The carpenter manufactures mainly custom furniture made from wood grown in their own forrest, such as black alder, pine, birch and rowan. In Nurmi necklaces I decided to use birch wood which is also grown locally.

The birch wood is coated with environmentally-friendly oil wax. The necklace comes in two colors: black and yellow.  The pendant hangs in a strong woven ribbon which is leftover from finnish textile industry. The necklaces are packed in a recycled cardboard jewellery case made in Denmark.

The Cube necklaces have just arrived to Nurmi webstore: you can find them here.
